About Zhongtai Zijing village: A entire village devoted flute craft. The forests that surround the village are full of a special variety bitter bamboo, named “Zhongtai Bitter Bamboo” after the area. Longer bamboo segments, even and unblemished inner walls, higher density wood and narrower segment necks make Zhongtai bamboo the perfect raw material for bamboo flutes, and Zijing Village in Zhongtai the home of bamboo flute craft in China.

Arrive and meet with Ding Shifu, generational inheritor and master of an ancient method of flutecraft.
Join the Shifu on a walk to the nearby bitter bamboo forest garden. Listen to as he explains how to recognize the best material for flute crafting (interpreter included).
Gather around the master’s home table to enjoy lunch in honest village hospitality. Chat and get to know your host and travel mates.
About Master Ding: A friendly, honest professional craftsman. Inventor of the first flute hole-drilling machine, master Ding honed and innovated the old Chinese Heritage skills he inherited from his ancestors.

Lunch ends, crafting begins. Select your bamboo, understand its musical key, then get to work line-marking, straightening, sanding, tempering, polishing and hole cutting.
